A Story Book Town

spending the day with Deb

Deb had the day off today and we were going to head to Baden-Baden, but we decided to go somewhere a little closer. Deb wanted to check-out a small town called, "Colmar". I was game! We arrived around lunch time via train.....I HAD to sit in Second Class with Deb because she didn't want to fork over the 5 extra Euros for a First Class ticket. Icky, I felt so dirty! Ha Ha! Just Kidding! We headed toward to the town center. The streets of Colmar are cobble-stoned, a little narrow at parts, and are lined with very unique buildings. It honestly feels like a storybook town. The buildings and windows looked like something out of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. So cool!

We walked around town searching for a spot for lunch. We find a nice little place with outdoor seating that served Flambe. The weather was very warm and the sky was clear. Great day to be walking around Colmar! Deb was telling me that Colmar get more sun then any other city in Europe. Awesome! We walked around some and ventured into shops. They even had a mushroom shop. Crazy! Deb spotted a place where she could buy a teapot so I let her take her time and I sat outside in the shade and just people-watched. I thought, "I could live in a place like this". It feels very hoomie and there are apartments above all the shops in town. So cool! When Deb was done we were on the search for ice cream. We found a place we saw earlier while eating lunch that had some good-looking sundaes. They were terrific!

After ice cream there was something that I just HAD to do. There has been something I've been wanting to do in France and today was a perfect day to do it. I wanted to go wine tasting! Now, the first time I went wine tasting was with my Mom in France. The second time was by myself in Napa after I interviewed someone for my thesis. I was wearing nice slacks and a tie and the people at the winery seriously thought I was there to write an article about them. I think because I was dressed up. I kept saying, "No no no, I'm just here because I'd never been wine tasting in Napa", but they were certain. They didn't even charge me for some of the wine I drank. No complaints! Moral of the story: When you go wine tasting....dress nice. Might even bring a note pad and pen just for kicks. Anyway, Deb and found this place that was tucked away just off one of the main strips. We were the only two in the place. This was a family-owned place called, "Karcher" which I believe is the last name of the family who owned it. Deb had some poor excuse for not having wine with me, but I was ready to do it without her. I tasted a dry and sweet Riesling....one of my favorite wines. Then I tried a sweet Gewurztraminer followed by a Muscat that smelled sweet, but tasted dry. It was fun!

After drinking some wine we decided to call it a day. Overall, I really enjoyed Colmar! Such a quaint town with a great mix of old and new (my favorite). It's a cool little storybook town. I loved to get one of the apartments above one of the little shop. Would be awesome! Sadly, most of the tourists are pretty old. Colmar is not overly populated with tourists, but come summer they'll be back.....and in greater numbers.
