Leaving Prague
Where is all this beer coming from?
06/03/2011
Today we got up earlier than we set the alarm for and gathered our things. Jeff's plan was to hangout in Prague for a few more hours and catch his afternoon bus to Nurnberg were he'll pick-up his bag and then jump on a train to Frankfurt. He will fly home the following day. My plan was to head to Krakow, but I couldn't find a fast train and the trip would take 8-hours. I could do a night train, but I've had my fill of Prague and the night train would have 3-4 stops so I wouldn't be able to sleep much. So, Poland will have to wait for another time. I've decided to head to Vienna for a couple of days.
Jeff and I had breakfast at the hotel. Jeff said, "Don't you get tired of eating the same thing for breakfast?" I just smiled and took another bite of my bologna. After, we grabbed our stuff and cleared up the hotel bill. It was only $4,300 kroner for two nights plus our bar bill. Not bad! It was my little splurge. However, from here on out it is Hostel-City! We jumped on the tram to the station where I was going to depart and Jeff was going to stash his bag for the afternoon. Jeff walked me to my train and we said our goodbyes. I jumped on the train and now for the rest of my trip I probably won't be meeting up with any friends or family. I've really enjoyed my time with my brother in Prague. Prague is a great little city, but I think it was over-hyped to me. Too touristy! However, it's a very beautiful and pleasant place to walk around. Plus, having my brother around was nice. It's rare that we get the opportunity to hangout let alone travel together so it was nice.
On the train, while waiting for it to get moving, a bunch of guys in their mid 30's came on the train hauling a couple of cases of beer. They sat in back of the train car from me. At the next stop a couple more came on with another container of beer....took town of them to carry it. At the next stop....guess what? Another shipment of beer! They started singing "Happy Birthday" into my journey. They were a little noisy, but not out of control. Guys where then walking past me into another car and then coming back with bags and hand-fulls of beer. I had no idea where they were getting this stuff!!! As the train got closer to my station you could tell that they had a lot to drink. They were making so many bathroom runs and they even had trouble opening the train doors into the next car. It was kind of funny! They even sang Happy Birthday again, but a much harsher version with all of their slurring. Again, it was funny!
I arrived in Vienna in the afternoon and was able to find my hostel without too much trouble. The rest of the evening was pretty uneventful. Just did some much needed laundry and took the night off. I caught up on some blogs, Skyped a few people, and that was about that.
Tomorrow I have a busy day so I need my rest!

OMGosh! You're in Vienna! That's were I lived in '74 to '75. You have to go to the Opera. Standing room used to be real cheap and there was a whole student culture around the waiting, running, grabbing a spot and tying the railing with a handkerchief. Great way to meet people. And jause with pastries every afternoon. And go out to the 2nd district (Zweite Bezirk, I think)to the Prater and ride the Riesenrad, the giant Ferris Wheel. Great views of the Danube. Oh, and the Naschmarkt is huge and a great place to buy every kind of fresh food imaginable. But then again, maybe things have changed in 35 years! Ha! Post pics for me, ok??
